Welcome Buds to Year 2
Summer 2nd Half term
An African Adventure
Our learning this term is based around Africa and in particular Zambia. We will be learning all about the physical and human features of this continent. We will compare our lives and those of children in Zambia. We will learn about their culture, traditions and the animals that live there. Within dance, we will create dances using traditional African music. DT this term will focus around textiles and explore African prints.
Over the past few weeks we have been writing non-chronological reports, all about lions. We have learnt about what they look like, where they live, how they hunt. Our next text is called, 'How to hide a lion'.
Summer 1st half term:
This term our theme is all about 'Superheroes'. We will be learning about heroes in the past and working on our historical enquiry skills.
Spring term:
Last term we learnt all about 'Growing Plants' we had a brilliant time planting and comparing how seeds and bulbs grow. We were able to grow some daffodils and our broad bean plants are growing away from a seedling into a more mature plant. I wonder how long do we have to wait until we have bean pods?
We used our scientific skills to set up an experiment and find out what the best conditions are for certain plants to grow.
The children wrote detailed stories about 'Jack and the Beanstalk' and then went on to write a story about 'Hansel and Gretel'.
We have been working hard in maths and securing our addition and subtraction skills. Don't forget, numbots is a great way to practise your number fluency.

The class email is a great way to keep communication as this is more difficult during drop off and pick up. Mrs Morgan and Mrs Fox will check the email daily and respond as promptly as possible.

Please bring your reading record to school every day. Children will now be given the opportunity to change their reading books daily. Please listen to your child read their book at home, even reading it more than once will increase your child's fluency and comprehension of the text.
Spelling test will now take place every Monday. You will be able to find the spelling list on our secure E Schools class page.  They will be uploaded every Monday for the following week. We will send home your spelling quiz scores in the back of your reading record. The quiz will usually include 8 spellings which follow the focus spelling rule and 2 common exception words.
Children are also encouraged to use Numbots as part of their home learning. Numbots is an online game designed for boosting addition and subtraction skills. Playing little and often will significantly improve your child’s recall and understanding of number bonds and addition and subtraction facts. Certificates will be awarded weekly in school for each level achieved. Teachers will monitor children's progress and effort on Numbots.
