Intent

At Chacewater School, PSHE is central to this ethos and equips children with the knowledge, skills and strategies to live healthy, safe and responsible lives.

Implementation

PSHE at Chacewater School is implemented using the Discovery Education programme which is a whole school approach. Progression in skills and knowledge in the subject is outlined in the PSHE progression grid. The curriculum for PSHE is delivered throughout the whole school. It is approached using videos as a toolkit to aid the learning and introduce the coverage, alongside lessons that are designed to engage and enrich the children’s learning of the statutory requirements. The six topics covered are: Healthy and Happy Relationships, Similarities and differences, Caring and responsibilities, Families and committed relationships, Healthy bodies and healthy minds and Coping with Change. Learning in each topic then takes place during weekly whole class lessons which explore the different themes. These themes are also embedded through all other lessons and the whole school day with everyone supporting and encouraging the children they interact with to use the skills they are developing and to make links to other areas of learning. Each topic contains age-appropriate content, developing themes in a ‘spiral curriculum’ so that pupils are building on their skills and understanding each year. Teachers may find that content sometimes overlaps or is repeated across topics; this is to enable pupils to develop, practise and apply knowledge and skills across different contexts and situations.

The aims of PSHE are to provide children with:

- accurate and relevant knowledge

- opportunities to create personal understanding

- opportunities to explore and challenge a range of values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities

- a range of skills and strategies to live a healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced life

Our PSHE programme deals with the diverse beliefs, values and attitudes that individuals and societies hold. It helps pupils to develop themselves, their understanding of the world, and their ability to communicate their feelings.

Impact

We firmly believe that at Chacewater, the meaningful PSHE curriculum is the key to children becoming confident, tolerant and well-rounded adults.  Children can approach a range of real life situations and apply their skills and attributes to help navigate themselves through modern life.  From exposure to a range of global issues and problems, children can build up tolerance and a sense of responsibility of being a british citizen.  Children can understand the different lifestyles that people may live and be respectful and tolerant towards those leading different lives to themselves.
